Screenshot_20160108-114606Bria is a desktop and mobile SIP Softphone developed by a company called CounterPath. It is available for Android phones and tablets, Apple phones and tablets, Windows, OS X, Linux, and more. It can be configured to work with a variety of services, including Ringfree’s VoIP telephone service. Here at Ringfree we’re fond of it as it’s proven to be reliable, easy to setup, and intuitive to use. We often recommend Bria as a first choice before other mobile applications for these reasons (though other mobile apps are certainly very capable).

Because Bria is not a Ringfree product, we’re limited in the degree of support we can offer for it, however we’re happy to provide setup assistance. Bria is a premium application (it is not available free of charge) and as such Bria users have access to CounterPath’s technical support for issues beyond the scope of what Ringfree can assist with. To reach CounterPath’s technical support, you may click here.

It’s important to know that if you have Ringfree telephone service, you have an extension within your phone system. In order to prevent conflicts between Bria (or another softphone) and your desk phone, a clone of your extension will need to be created. To create the cloned extension, simply contact Ringfree’s technical support.

It’s also worth noting that some cellular carriers, notably Verizon, block SIP traffic on the default port used by Bria and other softphones. This effects softphone use on the carrier’s mobile data network but has no effect while using a WiFi connection. To circumvent this, Ringfree will need to open an auxiliary port for SIP traffic. Please indicate your cellular carrier when communicating with Ringfree’s technical support.

Once entered, you have completed the steps necessary to configure Bria with your Ringfree telephone service. If there are no errors with the configuration options, you should now see a green phone icon on the Accounts page which indicates a successfully configured account.

If you move to the dialer screen you should notice the words Phone Ready above the Account Name you specified earlier. You can now make and receive phone calls from your mobile device using your Ringfree VoIP telephone service.
